IN April 2025, we were fortunate to catch the Republic of Singapore Air Force F-16 training Squadron based out of Luke AFB in Arizona. They are incorporated to the USAF 425th FS Black Widows. There was a total of 12 aircraft coming thru Ft Worth Alliance Airport from their training in Florida.

Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) 425th Fighter Squadron “FS” (“Black Widows”) based at Luke Air Force Base (AFB), Arizona, USA:
- Core Mission: Advanced Fighter Pilot Training. The primary purpose of the 425th FS is to train newly graduated RSAF pilots to become combat-ready F-16 Fighting Falcon pilots. It forms a crucial part of Singapore’s overseas fighter training pipeline.
- Location: Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, USA. Luke AFB is the largest F-16 training base in the world, operated by the US Air Force (USAF).and soon to be reloacted to Ft Smith Arkansas in 2025.
- Joint Unit: It’s a unique Peace Carvin V detachment. The squadron is a joint RSAF-USAF unit:
- Personnel: Mix of RSAF pilots, maintenance crews, and support staff, alongside USAF Instructor Pilots (IPs) and support personnel.
- Command: The Commanding Officer is an RSAF Lieutenant Colonel. The squadron falls under the operational command of the USAF 56th Fighter Wing (and administratively under the 944th Fighter Wing, Air Force Reserve Command) at Luke AFB.
- Aircraft: Operates the F-16C/D Block 52+ Fighting Falcon. The squadron transitioned to this advanced variant around 2009. These are RSAF-owned aircraft maintained to RSAF standards.
- History & Significance:
- Established at Luke AFB in 1993 (initially as the 425th Fighter Training Squadron).
- Represents a deep and long-standing strategic defense partnership between Singapore and the United States.
- Provides RSAF pilots access to world-class training facilities and vast airspace in the southwestern US, unavailable in Singapore.
- Training Pipeline:
- RSAF pilots arrive after completing basic flight training (often in Texas or Australia).
- Undergo intensive F-16 conversion, tactical employment, and mission qualification training.
- Graduates return to Singapore to join operational F-16 squadrons.
- Secondary Role: Provides Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT)/Adversary Support to other USAF units training at Luke AFB and within the region, enhancing the training realism for all participants.
The RSAF 425th Fighter Squadron at Luke AFB is a cornerstone of Singapore’s fighter pilot training program. It leverages the exceptional facilities and partnership with the USAF to produce highly skilled F-16 pilots for Singapore’s defense, operating within a fully integrated joint squadron structure. It symbolizes the strong bilateral defense relationship between the two nations.
