The “BUFF” (Big Ugly Fat Fellow) has outlasted many of its intended replacements due to its incredible structural versatility and ease of maintenance.
Modernization: Under the CERP (Commercial Engine Replacement Program), these aircraft are receiving new engines, digital cockpits, and improved radar, which will likely keep them flying into the 2050s—potentially a 100-year service life.
Standoff Capability: It doesn’t need to fly over a target anymore; it can launch cruise missiles from hundreds of miles away.
Nuclear Triad: It remains a critical air-based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent.
Specifically associated with the 307th Bomb Wing, which is a Reserve Command unit.
Role: This unit is unique because it operates the B-52 Formal Training Unit (FTU), meaning they are responsible for training all B-52 aircrews for the entire Air Force.
