Situated in San Antonio , TX . These 2 base share the runway and is in close proximity of each other. Current operation of the base are as follows:
- 2001, as part of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) action, the former Kelly AFB runway and land west of the runway became “Kelly Field.”
- Control of this reduced-size installation was transferred to the adjacent Lackland Air Force Base, forming Joint Base San Antonio.
- Today, Kelly Field supports flight operations of two tenant commands:
- The Air Force Reserve Command’s 433rd Airlift Wing, operating the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy.
- The Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Wing, operating the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon as you can see later that some of the 149th F16 still bare the Alabama ANG markings.
